Why toenails grow in

An ingrown toenail develops when the nail edge repeatedly injures the surrounding tissue. Pain, redness and inflammation may follow.

Why toenails grow in
01

Common causes

Cutting the nail too short or rounding the corners deeply can encourage the edge to grow into the skin. Tight footwear, constant pressure, trauma and the natural shape of the nail can also contribute.

02

Signs that need attention

Pain along the nail edge, redness, swelling, discharge or a problem that returns after a previous procedure are reasons to arrange an in-person assessment.

03

How to reduce the risk

Cut nails straight across without digging into the corners, choose footwear with enough toe room and seek help early if pain or inflammation appears.

04

When the problem returns

A recurrent ingrown toenail requires an assessment of the nail shape, surrounding tissue and earlier treatment. The method is chosen individually.
